APLA Statement on harassment and discrimination (APLA Event Code of Conduct, 2022):
“We do not tolerate harassment in any form. Harassment is understood as any behaviour that threatens another person or group, or produces an unsafe environment. It includes offensive verbal comments or nonverbal expressions related to gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, religious beliefs, sexual or discriminatory images in public spaces (including online), deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.” (section 2)

In addition to the statements and guidelines outlined in the APLA Event Code of Conduct, the APLA Conference Committee would like to provide guidance around conduct in a virtual setting and further emphasize the importance of inclusion and respectful discourse. APLA encourages all attendees to practice empathy, patience, and kindness with your colleagues – and yourselves!
Tips for respectful online session attendance
- Please mute your microphone and keep your camera off unless directed otherwise by the presenter(s).
- Take direction from the presenter and moderator regarding question-and-answer periods. While some folks might prefer the chat function, others might ask attendees to speak. Please be respectful of the presenter’s chosen method of interaction and communication.
- Arrive on time for the presentations you’ve chosen to attend.
- Avoid multi-tasking – be present!
- If you’re experiencing technical issues with the session you’re attending, please contact us at conference@apla.ca. A member of the APLA Conference Committee will be able to assist you, but please be patient; we will try to handle any issues as soon as possible.
- If you’ve asked a question, allow for others in the session to ask a question first before asking a second or third.
- Practice patience with presenters and fellow attendees; some presenters and attendees might experience technical difficulties or perhaps they have little experience using PheedLoop, Zoom, or an online conference platform. We’re all trying our best!
Privacy
Although some of our sessions are being recorded, please refrain from filming or photographing sessions and sharing via social media without the consent of presenters and attendees. Further, some of our sessions address sensitive subjects and might generate personal discussions. Please be respectful of your colleagues’ personal experiences and not share the information they share outside of the session.
Prioritizing First Voices
Many of our sessions address topics surround equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), vulnerable and marginalized communities, and sensitive issues. Please yield time and space during these discussions to First Voice perspectives. Although we encourage active participation from all attendees, we ask our attendees and presenters to acknowledge their privileged perspectives and prioritize voices with lived experiences.
